Directed paths: from Ramsey to Ruzsa and Szemeredi
نویسنده
چکیده
Starting from an innocent Ramsey-theoretic question regarding directed paths in tournaments, we discover a series of rich and surprising connections that lead into the theory around a fundamental problem in Combinatorics: the Ruzsa-Szemerédi induced matching problem. Using these relationships, we prove that every coloring of the edges of the transitive n-vertex tournament using three colors contains a directed path of length at least √ n · elog n which entirely avoids some color. We also completely resolve the analogous question for ordinary monochromatic directed paths in general tournaments, as well as natural generalizations of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem which we encounter through our investigation.

An Introduction to Additive Combinatorics
This is a slightly expanded write-up of my three lectures at the Additive Combinatorics school. In the first lecture we introduce some of the basic material in Additive Combinatorics, and in the next two lectures we prove two of the key background results, the Freiman-Ruzsa theorem and Roth’s theorem for 3-term arithmetic progressions. Lecture I: Introductory material 1. Basic Definitions. 2. I...

متن کاملDirected Ramsey number for trees
In this paper, we study Ramsey-type problems for directed graphs. We first consider the k-colour oriented Ramsey number of H, denoted by − →r (H, k), which is the least n for which every k-edgecoloured tournament on n vertices contains a monochromatic copy of H. We prove that − →r (T, k) ≤ ck|T |k for any oriented tree T . This is a generalisation of a similar result for directed paths by Chvát...
متن کاملSelected Results in Additive Combinatorics: An Exposition (Preliminary Version)
We give a self-contained exposition of selected results in additive combinatorics over the group GF (2)n = {0, 1}n. In particular, we prove the celebrated theorems known as the Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers theorem (’94 and ’98) and the Freiman-Ruzsa theorem (’73 and ’99), leading to the remarkable result by Samorodnitsky (’07) that linear transformations are efficiently testable. No new result is pro...
متن کاملStar-Avoiding Ramsey Numbers
The graph Ramsey number R(G,H) is the smallest integer n such that every 2-coloring of the edges of Kn contains either a red copy of G or a blue copy of H . We find the largest star that can be removed from Kn such that the underlying graph is still forced to have a red G or a blue H . Thus, we introduce the star-avoiding Ramsey number r∗(G,H) as the smallest integer k such that every 2-colorin...
